What an applicant tracking system actually does

An applicant tracking system (ATS) stores applications, reads each resume into structured fields such as name, jobs, dates and skills, and lets recruiters search and filter them. It mostly organises candidates; people still make the decisions. What hurts you is a resume it cannot read cleanly.

That is why an ATS checker looks at two things: can the text be extracted in the right order, and does the content show the skills and results a recruiter searches for.

What ResumePoint checks

The score is made of four categories, and every issue points at the exact line so you can fix it.

• Impact: action verbs, results with numbers, and weak phrases such as "responsible for".
• Language and style: consistent tense, buzzwords, passive voice, filler and spelling.
• ATS and format: standard section headings, readable dates, single-column layout, contact details, length and font size.
• Completeness: summary, skills, education and enough detail in each role.

Formatting mistakes that break resume parsing

These are the most common reasons a resume is read incorrectly:

• Text saved as an image or a flat scan, so there is nothing to extract.
• Two or more columns, tables or text boxes that are read out of order.
• Creative section names such as "My journey" instead of "Work Experience".
• Contact details placed in headers or footers, which some parsers skip.
• Inconsistent or missing dates, so employment history cannot be ordered.

How to use the score

Start with the red items, then the amber ones. Each fix shows why it matters, and you can jump straight to the field or let the AI suggest a rewrite you review before accepting. The score is an estimate based on widely published resume guidance; it cannot promise a result with any specific employer.
